Jonas Olson – Getting Real about Moral Fictionalism

Prochain Atelier du GRIN 2010

Jonas Olson (Stockholm)
"Getting Real about Moral Fictionalism"

Abstract: Suppose moral error theory is true, to the effect that first order moral claims are systematically untrue. What implications would and should this have for our use of ordinary moral discourse? A recently popular suggestion is to adopt (a revolutionary version of) moral fictionalism. In this paper I consider recent defences of moral fictionalism, due to Daniel Nolan, Greg Restall, & Caroline West, and Richard Joyce. I argue that these defences are unconvincing. In the final section I defend an alternative view, which I call moral conservationism.
