This paper seeks to read Plato’s allegory of the cave from a post-colonial perspective. Central to the post-colonial perspective is the view that knowledge as well as the notion of the ‘greater good’ are local. An argument that emerges then is that Plato’s understanding of the ‘knowledge of the shadows’ needs to be revisited in order to ascertain the importance of such knowledge for the people of the cave. The paper then will attempt to make a case for the importance of such a revisitation for philosophy of education.
